Can we meet you ma?
My name is Ishola Omolola Precious, LL.B (Hons). I am an avid law graduate with a second-class(upper) degree. I am keen on expanding my legal knowledge across various practice areas and carving a niche for myself in the legal profession. I am a self-driven individual and consider myself blessed.
Section A:
What motivated you to pursue your current course of study, and how do you see yourself applying your knowledge in the future?
During my secondary school days, I discovered my love for advocacy. Before choosing my university course, I researched lucrative options for art students. Law aligned perfectly with my desire to educate people about their rights, as I noticed that “Ignorance of the Law” is a big issue in Nigeria.
In the future, I see myself enlightening the masses about the law and advocating for my clients.
Can you describe a particularly challenging project or assignment you've worked on? How did you overcome obstacles?
The most challenging project I faced was my final year long essay (project) in my fifth year. At times, I felt overwhelmed and drained. However, I realized that these challenges were aimed at honing my legal skills. When faced with difficulties, I try to compose myself and maintain an optimistic outlook. I reminded myself that there is always light at the end of the tunnel and find ways to work through the challenges.
Section B:
Can you give an example of a time when you demonstrated leadership or teamwork skills?
During group assignments in class, I often took the initiative when other group members were reluctant to participate. I suggested dividing tasks to ensure everyone's involvement, which proved successful. Additionally, during my internship at Hilton Top Virtual Solicitors in 2023, I collaborated effectively with law students from various Nigerian universities to submit an outstanding group assignment.
How do you handle stress, pressure, or setbacks?
When faced with stress, firstly, I speak with the Holy Spirit. Then, I relax by listening to music that helps me process my emotions or by reading fictional novels to temporarily distract my mind. Afterward, I return to the task with renewed energy and focus.
How do you prioritize tasks and manage your time effectively?
I plan the next day before going to sleep, setting times for each task in order of priority (most important/urgent first). I also allocate time for unforeseen circumstances. I strive to make every minute count when attending to my tasks.
Section C:
What do you think are the most valuable aspects of your university experience so far?
All aspects have been valuable, from academics (my primary purpose) to spiritual growth (through MFMCF) and relationship with friends and seniors.
How do you engage with the university community?
I am a member of Legal Magnet and attend their convergence meetings. I also attend my chamber (Femi Falana Chambers) meetings. Also I am a member of OOU Taekwondo team and a founding member of the Tax Club, OOU. Also, I played football as a mid-fielder for my class (Legal Clarion female football team) during OOULAWSS sport fest.
Can you describe a memorable learning experience or interaction with a lecturer?
Taxation classes with Mr. Osifeso were always memorable. I looked forward to these classes where we could ask tax-related questions and discuss other life topics.
How do you think the university could improve or support students better?
The university could:
Make it compulsory for students to participate in at least two academic-related extracurricular clubs each session.
Implement more class presentations and frequent tests to keep students engaged.
Provide free Internet connection on campus to give students easy access to relevant academic materials.
What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?
Make your academics your top priority. Do not hesitate to ask questions from knowledgeable classmates and seniors. Lastly, trust in God with all your heart.
Section D:
How would you approach a complex problem or ethical dilemma in your field?
I would set ethical standards aligned with my field's code of ethics. This would serve as my guide, ensuring that I'm known for upholding professional ethical conduct. When faced with a complex problem or dilemma, I would refer to and adhere to the provisions of my field's code of ethics.
Can you walk me through your thought process when tackling a difficult law exam?
Anytime I encounter a difficult law question and can't formulate a clear answer within five minutes, I move on to other questions. If I must answer that specific difficult question, my next step is to write briefly on everything related to the topic, demonstrating to the examiner that I've studied the subject and attended classes.
How do you evaluate information and sources for credibility?
I consider the reputation and track record of the sources. Sometimes, I separate the source from the information, as useful information can come from less credible sources. In such cases, I verify the information using more reliable sources.
Can you discuss a current issue in your field and potential solutions?
A persistent issue in the legal field is shallow legal research. To address this, I suggest:
- Encouraging thorough legal research and writing from the first year of law school.
- Implementing practical approaches beyond exams, such as compulsory research exercises.
- Introducing mandatory internships for law students from their third to fifth year.
Section E:
Tell me about a time when you overcame a significant obstacle.
During a law of taxation class, we were assigned to create a PowerPoint presentation. I didn't have a laptop, which initially seemed like a major obstacle. However, I discovered that I could use Microsoft PowerPoint on my Android phone to create the slides. This solution not only allowed me to complete my assignment but also enabled me to help my course mates with their presentations.
Describe a situation where you demonstrated initiative or took on additional responsibilities?
During my campus fellowship's Sisters' Conference 2024, I volunteered to work as part of the protocol team, a role I wouldn't typically take on. I found that I enjoyed the experience and wouldn't hesitate to take on similar responsibilities in the future, even if my schedule is already busy.
How do you respond to feedback or criticism?
During my final year project, my knowledge was tested and challenged. At times, the criticism made me doubt myself. However, I chose to view the comments positively, treating them as opportunities for improvement. These critiques have since helped me navigate current tasks more effectively.
Best regards,
Ishola Omolola Precious
